Dry needling is different to acupuncture, it is used to stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. Traditional acupuncture uses traditional Chinese medicine principles to aid in health of the patient.
Current literature appears to support dry needling for the treatment of myofascial pain, and limit pain perception. The effects of this approach appears more effective when combined with other physical therapy techniques rather when used as a sole treatment. Dry needling has been deemed safe, often effective, and consistent with the general scope of practice for a physical therapist.
