Low back pain is a common problem during pregnancy, and this can often be due to increased demand placed on the body as the baby grows. Stresses are placed on the joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons, which can lead to overload and injury.
A review of eight studies examining the effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) for low back pain during and after pregnancy was conducted. It was concluded that OMT produced clinically relevant benefits for pregnant or postpartum women with low back pain. Outcome measures were based on decreasing pain and improving function.
